Ever heard of happy wife happy home? I believed that until I studied how the release of chemicals and hormones worked in the body. Now in terms of a job, how can you create a healthy environment for your employees. Healthy work environments create happy employees. Happy employees work more productively in all they do. Statistics say: 69% of employees say they’d work harder if they were better appreciated. Here’s how to do it, and this is why. Always target the mind. Forget everything else. As long as you are targeting the mind of your employees, you’ll have a successful business through and through. Are you ready? Ok, here’s how.
Happy hormones are released in least stressful environments. There are four hormones/chemicals that promote happiness. In a work environment I create and control, I would ideally do the following to increase moral.
Releasing Serotonin: Creating an BioChemical System in The Work Environment
Serotonin is said to be the mood stabilizer. Those said to struggle with mood swings need a release of serotonin. Different things I can do to create a work environment that would cause my employees brains to release this chemical is by creating a bio friendly environment. This, to me, means I would ensure there are small gardens in between desks. Plants by bay windows, and a circulation of fresh air would be an investment in the release of serotonin. Exercising and eating a well balanced diets are other ways to release serotonin. One of my employers once had an account at a near by restaurant, and they provide lunch for employees everyday. It's clean eating, too. What a way to release serotonin.
2. Endorphin Release: Natural Pain Reliever
Next is the body's natural pain killer, which aids in overcoming discomfort and stress: endorphins. This one, too, allows the brain to release the chemical by spending time outdoors. It's the healing of plants! Meditating and laughing are other ways to release endorphins, but realistically speaking as an employer, I don't have control over any one of the employees and their choices. Taking charge over the environment is always best. You can make suggestions for employees to take, but what happens if they choose not to take them? Then what? The money you’ve wasted on posters will be in vain. Sometimes, they are able to bring themselves to do it either. Can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Well yeah, because people are set in their ways. During the first 7 years of life, children are in a complete state of hypnosis. This is important to note because if you raise a child in the way that they should go, they will not depart. (Proverbs 22:6) This is because of the state of hypnosis people are under that shapes and influences their day to day lives. Your job is simply to shift the atmosphere and control the environment. YOU are the thermostat!
3. Releasing Dopamine: The Reward Chemical
Dopamine is released with small lists that can be achieved in time. Dopamine is the reward chemical and can also be released through listening to music. I find that jazz is a stress reliever. It's neutral and often doesn't have words: the good ol’ elevator music. Making a to-do list and checking it twice is another way to release the dopamine hormone. The sense of pride and accomplishment, no matter how small, is a great way to cause the release of dopamine in your employees. I suggest having a goal board, and celebrating the employees for their accomplishment instead of just going down a list of goals and condemning them for not reaching them.
4. Releasing Oxytocin: The Love Chemical
Last but not least is the love hormone: oxytocin. Doing something special to recognize the employees without competition, spending time with the employees in group projects as a servant leader, and giving free massage gift cards as incentives are all ways to release the dopamine in each employee. All the options listed are strategic and not blindly picked. Oxytocin is released as spending time with them and massages are all tactics used to hack the release of hormones. It may seem like they're all large expenses, but they really aren't. Think about it; they are all tax write-offs. Which is a tactic Trump used not to pay taxes, but we shan't get into politics now shall we! (British Accent)
